Paper Fan

A fan is the ideal thing to have when you are sweating on a bright sunny summer day.


All you need is:
1. Paper
2. One strand from the broom stick
3. Colours

Step 1: Fan fold the paper as shown in the figure.

Step 2: Again fold it from the centre and stick the inner leaves of the paper with each other.



Step 3: Break two sticks from the end of the broom stick and stick it to the fan
            as shown in the picture. This will make it easier to hold and to fan.


Use bright colours to colour your fan and carry it with you as it is likely
to come in quite handy.

Ice Cream Stick Photo Frame

How do we make sure that our favourite person stays by our side at most times?
Simple - we frame their photographs and keep them in a place where we can
always see them. What fun if we could make the photo frames too!
And it is not at all difficult.





The things you need:
1. Ice Cream sticks.
2. Colours.
3. Thick string or wire.

Step 1 Collect around 15 ice cream sticks. For the base of the frame,
            stick the ice cream sticks as shown in the picture.

         

Step 2 Leave half-an-inch space from all the sides and glue four sticks on the
           base to make the upper layer of the frame.  
Step 3 Slide the photograph through the gap.
Step 4 Take a thick wire or a string to make a loop. Stick the two ends of the loop
            at the back of the frame. You can now hang your photo frame.
 
         
You can draw a variety of patterns on the side of your photo frame with the help of crayons.

Children's Art & Craft Activities

Cap Your Scissors

If you want to find your scissors just when you need them, make this sturdy case for them.

The things you need:
1. Any old cloth (12 inches by 16 inches)
2. A sheet of foam (half inch thickness)
3. A needle and  some threads
4. A thick

Step 1: Fold the cloth into a quarter. Draw a triangle of base three inches and height seven inches, as shown 
             below. Cut it out.


Similarly, cut the foam into two triangles of the same dimensions as the cloth.

Step 2: Machine stitch a layer of foam in between the two layers of the cloth.

Step 3: When the two triangles with foam padding are complete, snip the apex and stitch the two pieces
             together from the three sides. Neatly hem the horizontal sides that are at the top, but separately.

Step 4: Stick the cord with an adhesive on the inner side of one of the triangles.


To make the scissor case look "fancy", you can embroider the cloth before stitching it.

Hang the case where it is easily accessible and secure your scissors.

Painting Pots

We cannot paint the walls of our house but we can definitely paint the pots in our house.
All you need is:
1. Poster paints.
2. Paint brush.
 
Step 1: Pick up a pot and remove any dust from it using a soft cloth or a brush.
Step 2: If you have earthern pots, give them a coating of colour that you think would match with the colour 
            of your walls.


Step 3: Let this base colour dry. Now you can paint a variety of patterns on top to decorate your pots.
            If your pots are cemented and polished, you can directly make patterns on them.

It's quite interesting and at the same time colourful and attractive too.

Try out Batik

 

You must have definitely heard about batik paintings. Believe it or not, this style is practised mostly in Indonesia and that is where it has grown to its present stature. Batik dyeing is no small task. Unlike bandhani where a part of the cloth is tied up and dyed, the batik style uses wax. Once the cloth is dyed, the motif looks like a network of shattered lines. Here is how you can do it.

The things you need:
1. Cotton cloth (50 cm x 50 cm)
2. Fabric dyes (yellow and blue)
3. Paraffin wax
4. Paint brush
5. Pencil
6. Wooden or plastic frame
7. Metal Container

 
Step 1: Draw out a picture of a Panda on the cloth and put it in a frame.

Step 2: Using the brush, apply a layer of wax on the area that you want to keep white. While doing this, the wax container should lie next to you on a slow fire. A stove or a heater would solve the purpose.




Step 3: Once the wax has dried, dip the cloth in the yellow dye. You will have a full yellow background and a partially yellow Panda.


Step 4: After the cloth dries, apply a layer of wax on the yellow background.

Step 5: Now, dip the cloth in blue dye. Take it out and leave it to dry.

Step 6: Boil water in a big vessel and dip the dyed cloth into it. The wax will melt and what you will see is a batik panda.What is unique about Batik is the cracked pattern that is made when colour passes through the layers of dry wax.
